Professional Ethics in Education: Meaning, Need, Importance and Professional Ethics for Teachers
D.El.Ed. TRAINEE INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCE by Dr. Vikram Kumar
1. Meaning of Professional Ethics in Education
Ethics (नीतिशास्त्र) originates from the
Greek word ethos, meaning character or custom. In a general sense, ethics deals
with moral principles (नैतिक सिद्धांत) that govern a person’s behavior. When
applied to a specialized field, Professional
Ethics (व्यावसायिक नीतिशास्त्र) refers to a codified set of moral principles, values, standards, and rules of conduct that guide
members of a profession in performing their duties with integrity (निष्ठा / ईमानदारी),
fairness (निष्पक्षता), and dedication (समर्पण).
|
Key Definition :
Educational Professional Ethics is the moral framework that
guides a teacher's conduct, choices, and interactions in the school
ecosystem, ensuring that the welfare, safety, and holistic
development of students remain the primary concern. |
2. Need and
Importance of Professional Ethics
Teaching is widely recognized not merely as
an occupation, but as a noble vocation (श्रेष्ठ
व्यवसाय / पवित्र कार्य). Teachers work directly with young, vulnerable (सुभेद्य
/ संवेदनशील), and impressionable (सहज प्रभावित होने वाले) minds. Therefore, the
need for professional ethics in education is critical for several key reasons:
- Safeguarding Student Welfare and Equity (छात्र
कल्याण और समानता की रक्षा): Primary school children
are highly dependent on adult guidance. Ethical standards ensure that teachers
treat every student with dignity (गरिमा), equity (समता), and care, regardless
of gender, caste, socio-economic status, religion, or ability (including
Children with Special Needs - CWSN).
- Building Trust with Stakeholders (हितधारकों
के साथ विश्वास निर्माण): A school relies on trust
between parents, teachers, and administrators. When educators strictly follow
an ethical code, parents feel confident placing their children in the school's
care, preserving community faith.
- Maintaining Professional Dignity and
Accountability (व्यावसायिक गरिमा और जवाबदेही): Professional
ethics establish boundaries that protect teachers from misconduct, bias,
or conflicts of interest. It sets clear standards for punctuality, preparation,
privacy, and continuous professional development.
- Modeling Moral Character for Young Learners (नैतिक चरित्र का मॉडल बनाना): Children learn more
from observing a teacher’s behavior than from textbook lessons alone. Ethical
teachers model integrity, active listening, respect, and fairness—qualities
that shape students into responsible citizens.
3. Core Dimensions of
Teacher Ethics
A comprehensive framework of professional
ethics for elementary teachers spans four primary relationships:
|
Ethical Dimension (नैतिक आयाम) |
Key Ethical Commitments (मुख्य नैतिक प्रतिबद्धताएं) |
|
1. Towards Students |
• Maintain
complete impartiality (निष्पक्षता); avoid favoritism or discrimination. |
|
2. Towards the Profession |
• Commit
to lifelong learning and updating subject knowledge. |
|
3. Towards Colleagues |
•
Cooperate in team-teaching, peer mentoring, and school events. |
|
4. Towards Parents & Society |
•
Communicate student progress with honesty and empathy (सहानुभूति / हमदर्दी). |
4. Ethical Dilemmas
in School Settings (Case Studies)
An Ethical
Dilemma (नैतिक दुविधा) occurs when a teacher faces a situation where two or
more moral principles clash, making the right decision challenging.
Case Scenario 1: Assessment vs. Compassion (मूल्यांकन बनाम दया)
- Situation:
A Class 4 student, Priya, misses a key term
assessment because she was caring for her younger sibling while her mother was
ill. School policies mandate a zero score for unexcused retakes.
- Ethical Analysis: Rule compliance (नियमों का पालन) requires giving a zero score, whereas ethical care and equity demand empathy toward the student's difficult household circumstances.
- Ethical Resolution (नैतिक समाधान): The teacher should advocate for the child by discussing the situation with the Head of School to arrange an alternative formative evaluation (रचनात्मक मूल्यांकन), fulfilling both fairness and institutional policy.
Case Scenario 2: Student Confidentiality vs. Child Protection (गोपनीयता बनाम बाल सुरक्षा)
- Situation:
A Class 5 boy confides in his teacher that he is
experiencing emotional abuse at home, but begs the teacher not to tell anyone
out of fear.
- Ethical Analysis: Confidentiality (गोपनीयता) is vital for trust, but child safety and legal duties require protecting the child from harm under frameworks like POCSO.
- Ethical Resolution (नैतिक समाधान): Child safety always overrides individual confidentiality requests. The teacher must gently inform the student that they need to notify school counselors and designated authorities to keep him safe.
5. Definition of Professional Ethics for Teachers
Professional Ethics for Teachers is a codified set of moral principles, values, standards, and rules of conduct that govern an educator's behavior, choices, and interactions within the school ecosystem
Key Pillars of Teacher Ethics
- Commitment to Students: Treating every child with impartiality, respect, and fairness regardless of background or abilities
. - Integrity & Excellence: Maintaining academic honesty, punctuality, thorough preparation, and continuous professional development
- Professional Relationships:Fostering respectful, non-judgmental collaboration with colleagues, administrators, and parents
- Societal Responsibility: Promoting democratic values, constitutional rights, cultural sensitivity, and responsible citizenship
A Code
of Conduct (आचार संहिता) outlines explicit rules, boundaries, and
professional duties expected of educators in their daily functioning. It
translates abstract ethical values into concrete, actionable standards.

from posting photos of students or discussing school administrative disputes
on personal social media accounts. |
B. Professional &
Academic Ethics for Students (विद्यार्थी नीतिशास्त्र)
Ethics in education is a two-way street.
Just as teachers follow a professional code, students must cultivate Academic & Personal Ethics (शैक्षणिक और
व्यक्तिगत नैतिकता) to foster a respectful, effective, and safe learning
environment.
- Academic Honesty (शैक्षणिक ईमानदारी): Completing assignments independently, refusing to copy during
examinations, and avoiding academic dishonesty. Example: Refusing to copy a
peer's homework and asking the teacher for help when confused.
- Respect for Diversity & Peers (सहानुभूति
व आपसी सम्मान): Treating classmates of all genders,
backgrounds, and physical abilities with respect. Example: Including children
with special needs (CWSN) in group games and project work without teasing.
- Punctuality & Discipline (समयबद्धता और अनुशासन):
Attending classes regularly on time, bringing
required learning materials, and adhering to classroom rules. Example: Entering
the class quietly after recess and keeping homework notebooks organized.
- Respect for School Property &
Environment (स्कूल संपत्ति और पर्यावरण का सम्मान): Taking
responsibility for keeping classrooms clean and avoiding damage to school
furniture or equipment. Example: Turning off fans and lights when leaving the
classroom and disposing of trash in dustbins.
- Digital Responsibility (डिजिटल जिम्मेदारी):
Using educational technology respectfully, avoiding
cyberbullying, and adhering to safe internet guidelines during ICT activities.
Example: Using school computer labs only for assigned learning activities.
Practical Activity for D.El.Ed Trainees
|
Exercise: Ethical Decision-Making Workshop Scenario: During an end-of-year review, a fellow
teacher asks you to alter attendance records for a student who is at risk of
failing the minimum attendance requirement due to unexcused absences. The
fellow teacher argues that failing the student will cause severe distress at
home. Trainee Tasks:
